Perched on the top of a bluff in West Seattle overlooking Puget Sound and the Olympic Peninsula, this extensive remodel and addition will transform a compartmentalized 1940’s house into a bright, open home. The traditionally styled shingle and stone clad exterior creates a romantic feel that better expresses the Owners’ desires than the original forms did. However, while the detailing is traditional, the Owners wanted an open floor plan to better accommodate their lifestyle and the dramatic views from Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains in the west to the Seattle skyline in the east. To achieve this openness on the main level, interior walls were removed, interior spaces reorganized and a Family Room and Sun Room were added. A full-height finished attic with a salt-box dormer located on the Puget Sound view side was added to further take advantage of the tremendous views. The basement and the upper level were reconfigured to meet the Owners’ needs in ways the original house never could.
